Jim Sorensen and Dannielle Mitchell Attend March Meeting

On March 27th, 2014, Director of the Golden Apple Scholars Program Jim Sorensen and Associate Director Dannielle Mitchell visited Golden Apple ISU at our monthly meeting in DeGarmo Hall. We were excited to give them a taste of our RSO by introducing new events such as Fundraisers and Socials, providing updates on our incredible success so far for Relay for Life, and celebrating our newest Gapple of the Month.  We were delighted to have both Jim and Dannielle speak about all of the new and exciting things happening with the foundation, especially regarding the new structure of Summer Institutes.

We want to thank Jim and Dannielle for making the effort to travel so far to see the Gapple family branch here at Illinois State University! We look forward to more such visits in the future!

Golden Apple Announces 175 Scholars for 2014

The Golden Apple Foundation has released the names and other information on the 175 high school seniors and college sophomores who have been accepted into the Golden Apple Scholars Program.

According to the Golden Apple website, “the 2014 class represents a 30% increase in future teachers now participating in the program in Illinois.” This is the largest number of Scholars awarded in all of the program’s 26 years.

“The 2014 class of Scholars represents a diverse group of young people from across the state of Illinois:

  • 61% are the first in their family to attend college
  • 39% are from very low/low income households
  • 56% are people of color
  • 21% are men and 79% are women”

We would like to congratulate all 175 new additions to the Golden Apple family, especially those who plan to attend Illinois State University (or already do!) We are all incredibly excited to meet and get to know these ’14 Gapples.

Nominations are open beginning on April 1st for the Class of 2015.

The list of the Golden Apple Scholar Class of 2014 and more information can be found at the Golden Apple Foundation’s website here.

Update: On Thursday, April 4th, Golden Apple asks that we celebrate the new class by remembering when we received our own life-changing letters and using the hashtags #‎BeTheChange‬ and ‪#‎WeLoveTeachers‬ across all social media.

March Meeting + Special Guests from the Foundation

Golden Apple ISU will hold the third meeting of the Spring semester on Thursday, March 27th at 7:30pm in DeGarmo Hall, room 209. All Golden Apple Scholars are welcome!

We are pleased to announce that Jim Sorensen and Dannielle Mitchell (née Dungey) from the Golden Apple Foundation will visit this meeting! We are very excited to show them what Golden Apple ISU is all about. You won’t want to miss this meeting!

We will discuss Socials, Community Service, and Committee news as well as other events, activities, and opportunities for Gapples at ISU. Since Relay for Life is a month away, we will finalize all of the details for that special night! Those who attend this meeting will also have the chance to have their voices heard. Be sure to bring your friends, sign in to earn GA points, and enjoy time with your Golden Apple family here at ISU – plus two visitors from Chicago!

Volunteer at Golden Apple Scholar Interviews

It’s time yet again for Golden Apple to conduct interviews for prospective Scholars, and they are asking for our help! Volunteers will be taking photographs, answering questions, and explaining the program to students and parents. The interviews will take place in Chicago at the Golden Apple Foundation on Saturday, 1/11, and Saturday, 1/18, as well as in Springfield at UIS on Saturday, 1/25. Interviews will run from about 9am to 4pm, and lunch will be provided for volunteers. This opportunity is always a fun way to help Golden Apple, spend time with fellow Scholars, and meet the potential new faces of the Foundation!

If you wish to volunteer at Interviews, contact Rocio Manriquez at Manriquez@goldenapple.org as soon as possible with the date(s) you are willing to help out.
