October Meeting & Halloween Party 10/23

This month’s Golden Apple ISU meeting will be part meeting, part Halloween party! On Thursday, October 23rd, all Gapples at ISU are invited to DeGarmo 208 at 7pm for pumpkin decorating and a Halloween costume contest. All of those who attend will receive a Dom Belmonte “Domfather” or Jim Sorensen “Fun-O-Meter” tee-shirt, and the winner of the costume contest will receive a special prize. As usual, we will also discuss news, events, and opportunities for Gapples at ISU and ask members for their input on what the RSO will do in the remainder of fall semester 2014.

Back to School News & Events

Golden Apple ISU would like to welcome everyone back to Illinois State University for the Fall 2014 semester! The Executive Board has a lot of great things planned for the upcoming months, and our biggest goal is to get YOUR ideas heard! Stay involved and attend meetings and events to have a say in the direction of the club this semester.

This September 27th marks our 10 Year Anniversary as a Registered Student Organization, and we want to celebrate! We will hold the 2014 Golden Apple Formal on that day, a Saturday, at 7:00pm in the Prairie Room in the Bone Student Center. More information on this spectacular annual event will be posted soon.

There are a few more dates that Gapples at ISU are welcome to attend:

During the first week of school, there are two events of interest. First, on Wednesday the 20th from 5:00pm-6:15 at DeGarmo Plaza, the College of Education is holding their yearly Pizza Party!  All future teachers attending ISU are welcome to come attend to enjoy free pizza and drinks and to minge with other Education Majors. Various Education-related RSOs will also be making presentations at the party. Each year, Golden Apple ISU members attend in large numbers. See you there!

Second, on Thursday the 21st at 7:00pm in DeGarmo Plaza, Golden Apple ISU will kick off the school year the Gapple way with an Ice Cream Social! Along with yummy frozen treats to enjoy in the last days of summer heat, there will be games such as four square, continuing a fun sense of competition enjoyed at last Spring’s Relay for Life. This event is organized by the Executive Board and will be a great way to unwind informally before the first meeting – and at the end of days of poring over syllabi!

Festival ISU will occur Thursday, August 28th, from 10:00am to 3:00pm on the quad. It is a tradition at Illinois State University during which all campus organizations, clubs, sports, departments, and even local businesses gather on the quad in tents and booths to showcase their involvement in the university. This is a great chance for new and returning students to seek out new organizations to join and get a ton of freebies from candy to tee shirts. Golden Apple ISU will have their own booth, and we will be looking for Gapples to volunteer time to sit at the booth between classes and explain the Golden Apple Scholars Program to potential Pathway Scholars as they pass. Festival ISU will take

The first Golden Apple ISU monthly meeting will be held on Thursday, August 28th at 7:00pm – just a few hours after Festival ISU wraps up. The location is currently TBA. All Gapples at ISU are welcome to come to reconnect with the GAISU family after a long and busy summer and to get started on RSO business for the semester. As stated above, the Executive Board will be very interested in what all members want from Golden Apple ISU this Fall. We will discuss events, activities, and opportunities for Gapples at ISU.

We have a busy start to the school year for Golden Apple ISU! See you all soon!

Mark Your Calendars: Spring Banquet May 2nd

On May 2nd, 2014, we will hold the first annual Spring Banquet for Golden Apple ISU in the Circus Room in the Bone Student Center. It will be planned by Social Chair Katie Oberman and her committee in conjunction with the Executive Board, and it will serve as our final event of the 2013-2014 school year. We will celebrate this year for Golden Apple ISU, say goodbye to those graduating and student teaching, and have some fun before finals week and summer vacation. All Golden Apple Scholars attending ISU will be invited, as well as alumni of Golden Apple ISU and those at the office of the Golden Apple Foundation. More information will be released soon.

School Supply Drive with U of I

From now until April 12th, we are collaborating with Golden Apple Illini on community service! Here at ISU, we will conduct a school supply drive; at UIUC, they will conduct a book drive. On April 12th, both RSOs will gather on ISU’s campus to organize everything we’ve collected for donation. We will then go out to dinner to celebrate our efforts together! Until then, spread the word and collect as many supplies as you can. For your convenience, feel free to bring supplies to the March meeting. For questions and to donate at other times, contact Community Service Chair Alysa White.

Formal 2013: Rollin’ Out the Red Carpet

Golden Apple ISU is pleased to announce the date for this year’s Golden Apple Formal! It will be Saturday, October 12th, from 8:00pm to 10:30pm in the Circus Room in the Bone Student Center at 100 N. University St., Normal, IL.

Social Chair Lydia Wilson and her Social Committee have been busy planning to make this the best Formal ever! First of all, there is a theme this year: Rollin’ Out the Red Carpet. Along with the usual fun night of dancing and mingling with Gapples from around the State, this year will see some changes.

The Circus Room is a different room than the last few years, though it is in the same building; it can be found on the ground floor of the Bone. It has recently been remodeled so we are very excited to have this night of fun there!

The Social Committee here at Golden Apple ISU has decided to also have what you might know as “Senior Superlatives,” with your votes being cast to name Mr. and Mrs. Golden Apple, among various other titles (some class specific, some not). You must be present at Formal to win your title, and all voting will take place there during between 8:30 and 9:45. The winners will all be announced at 10:10. We hope that this will be a fun way to celebrate each other and Golden Apple!

All Golden Apple Scholars are invited to this event – that means that Gapples at Illinois State University are encouraged to offer up their place to house their friends from other schools! Please keep in mind that this is a Gapple-only event, so no dates outside of the Scholars Program will be permitted.

You can RSVP to the event on Facebook here. Please let us know if you’re coming, and prepare for a special night to remember!

“Kick” Off the School Year with Golden Apple Kickball

Golden Apple ISU is going to “kick” off the new school year in a new way! Social Chair Lydia Wilson would like to invite all Gapples at ISU to play a few games of kickball on Saturday, September 7th at Underwood Park at 1:00pm.  We will meet at the Bone Student Center at 12:45 to travel to the park together and divide into teams. Latecomers welcome, and there may be snacks! This will be an excellent event to reconnect with your Gapple friends, make new ones, and have some fun in the summer weather while it lasts! RSVP on Facebook here.
