The Golden Apple Foundation has released the names and other information on the 175 high school seniors and college sophomores who have been accepted into the Golden Apple Scholars Program.
According to the Golden Apple website, “the 2014 class represents a 30% increase in future teachers now participating in the program in Illinois.” This is the largest number of Scholars awarded in all of the program’s 26 years.
“The 2014 class of Scholars represents a diverse group of young people from across the state of Illinois:
- 61% are the first in their family to attend college
- 39% are from very low/low income households
- 56% are people of color
- 21% are men and 79% are women”
We would like to congratulate all 175 new additions to the Golden Apple family, especially those who plan to attend Illinois State University (or already do!) We are all incredibly excited to meet and get to know these ’14 Gapples.
Nominations are open beginning on April 1st for the Class of 2015.
The list of the Golden Apple Scholar Class of 2014 and more information can be found at the Golden Apple Foundation’s website here.
Update: On Thursday, April 4th, Golden Apple asks that we celebrate the new class by remembering when we received our own life-changing letters and using the hashtags #BeTheChange and #WeLoveTeachers across all social media.
